How Assistive Technology is Transforming Everyday Life for Persons with Disabilities

Assistive technology (AT) has become one of the most powerful tools in improving independence, accessibility, and quality of life for persons with disabilities (PWDs). From mobility aids to smart digital tools, assistive technologies help individuals perform everyday activities that might otherwise be difficult or impossible. As innovation continues to evolve, these technologies are transforming the way people learn, work, communicate, and interact with the world.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 2.5 billion people globally need one or more assistive products, and with an aging population and rising chronic diseases, this number is expected to reach 3.5 billion by 2050. However, access to these technologies remains unequal across the world. In some low-income countries, only 3% of people who need assistive products actually have access to them, compared to about 90% in high-income countries. These statistics highlight the urgent need to expand access to assistive technology worldwide.

Assistive technology refers to any device, equipment, or system designed to increase, maintain, or improve the functional abilities of individuals with disabilities. These tools serve as a bridge between a person’s remaining abilities and the demands of daily life. Rather than replacing human capability, assistive technology helps individuals maximize their independence and participate more actively in society.
